Chapter 5. GarageBand > Change the grid

Change the grid

The GarageBand window contains two tiny ruler icons called grid buttons. These let you set the Timeline grid and the Track Editor grid to any of the note values shown in the grid button pop-up menus. When the grid value is set to “Automatic,” the grid value changes automatically as you zoom in or out of the Timeline or Track Editor. The Triplet and Swing settings can completely change the rhythm and feel of a region. To test the effect, try this grid-setting experiment:

1.
Place a Software Instrument loop, such as “70s Ballad Piano” in the Timeline. Select it, click the Play button, and listen to it.

2.
Click the Track Editor button (scissors icon) to open the Track Editor.

3.
Click the Track Editor's grid button and choose “1/8 Swing Heavy” from the pop-up menu.

4.
Select a note in the Track Editor, then press Command A to select all the notes in the region.

5.
Click the “Align” button in the “Advanced” column (shown below). The notes realign themselves to the Swing grid you selected.
