Chapter 15. Mail > Write and send a NEW message

Write and send a NEW message

1.
Click “New” in the toolbar to open a “New Message” window, as shown below.

2.
Click in the “To” area (called a field) and type an email address. You can type more than one address in here; just type a comma after each address.

An email address must have an @ symbol followed by a domain name, such as “ ratz.com,” “aol.com,” “comcast.net,” etc.

If the person you are sending email to is in your Address Book or Previous Recipients list (which you'll find in the Window menu), Mail replaces the email address with that person's name as soon as you type it. This is called a “Smart Address.” If you prefer to see the actual address, see page 410 to change the preference.

To change or edit that name, Control-click (or right-click) on the name and a little menu pops up (as shown below); choose the action you want to take. If the recipient is in your Address Book and has more than one email address, the pop-up menu also shows all available email addresses; choose the address you want to use.

3.
To send a copy of this same letter to someone, click in the “Cc” field and type an address. You can type more than one address, separated by commas. All recipients will know these people are Cc'd.

4.
Click in the “Subject” field and type a personalized message description so the recipient knows your message is not junk mail. Avoid using phrases that spammers use, such as “Hi,” “I missed you,” or “We need to talk.” Provide some clue that makes it clear you know the recipient!

5.
Click in the empty message pane and type a message.

Tip

If you can't apply formatting to the selected text, such as bold, italic, or color, perhaps your mail is set up as “Plain Text.” To change the setting so you can apply formatting, go to the Format menu and choose “Make Rich Text.”

6.
Connect to the Internet if you're not already connected.

7.
Click the “Send” icon in the toolbar (shown to the right and circled, above).

A copy of the sent message is stored in the “Sent” folder in the Mailbox Sidebar.
