To add new fields to an individual card

1.
Select the card and click its Edit button.

2.
From the Card menu, slide down to “Add Field,” then choose the field you want to add.

Once you have a Birthday field in Address Book, go to the iCal preferences and choose to “Show Birthdays calendar.” All birthdays that have been noted in your Address Book will be automatically added as events in iCal.
