Preface > X-What, You Say?

X-What, You Say?

Unfortunately, the name X10 causes a bit of confusion. X10 is the name of three things: the protocol used to communicate over the power line, the eponymous name of a company that manufactures home automation equipment, and the brand under which the equipment is sold. Let’s sort it all out.

The X10 communications protocol debuted in 1978 in the form of the X10 Home Automation System sold and manufactured by X10 Corporation. In addition to selling modules under the X10 brand name, X10 Corporation is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for devices sold by others under several different names. See “Shop for Secret X10 Devices” [Hack #23] for a listing of some of the names under which you’ll find X10-compatible devices sold.
