Preface > Crossing Platforms

Crossing Platforms

Just as the fundamental principals of X10-based automation can be used with other protocols, the same philosophy applies to home automation software. Most of the hacks in this book are implemented using one of three different home automation programs: HomeSeer [Hack #19] for Windows, Indigo [Hack #18] for Macintosh, or XTension [Hack #17] for Macintosh. Other software packages are available (see “Add a Brain to Your Smart Home” [Hack #16] for a list of some of the others), but just as X10 concepts can be applied to other technologies, so, too, can programming techniques.

If you come across a hack you want to use, and it’s described using software you don’t have, in most cases, you can apply its technique to another software package. For example, a hack that uses Indigo might use trigger actions to react to signals from motion detectors. In HomeSeer, you’d use events instead. Techniques that rely on platform-specific capabilities, such as Macintosh’s AppleScript, won’t be translated easily, but, in many cases, taking an idea from one world to another will be possible.
