Get More Out of Your Motion Detectors

A computer-based home automation system can derive useful information from even the simplest of X10 modules.

Instead of simply having motion detectors [Hack #6] turn lights on and off, you can use them to determine what state [Hack #24] the house is currently in. For example, if it’s daytime and a weekday, the motion detector at the front door will create a trigger that puts the house into away mode [Hack #70] after 30 minutes. Once the house is in away mode, any activity will trigger a notification [Hack #73]. At night, a lack of motion for a long period puts the house into sleep mode [Hack #48].

You implement these functions using an attachment script [Hack #88] for Indigo [Hack #18]. The script implements a function called mslogging() that, in turn, creates and maintains several Indigo variables to keep track of various states and data:
