Avoid Common X10 Problems

When a problem arises, these handy tips will get you well on the road to resolving it quickly.

If you’re experiencing problems with your X10 modules (lights that won’t turn off or on, for example), you always should check the three things addressed in this hack first. If you start with these, you’ll solve most problems in a short amount of time.

Lights That Turn On Unpredictably

When the lights come on randomly, and you’re sure your house isn’t haunted, it’s due to either genuine X10 commands or an interference that masquerades as an X10 command. Let’s discuss genuine commands first.

It is possible that one of your neighbors has an X10 system, perhaps without even realizing it [Hack #23]. X10 signals can travel from one home to another when the homes share the same transformer. A single electrical distribution transformer will service from three to eight homes. To avoid conflicts with your neighbor’s equipment, change the module’s X10 address so that it won’t pay attention to the foreign commands.
