Improve X10 Reliability

The electrical environment in your home can be a pretty harsh place; it’s filled with noise and connections that aren’t conducive to the propagation of X10 commands. But with a little work, you can improve it greatly.

The most common criticism of X10 is that it isn’t 100% reliable. And that’s true; as a protocol, it’s quite simplistic. There’s no error correction and signals aren’t acknowledged, so, in most cases, your modules simply send their commands and hope they get through to their intended recipient. To make matters worse, the medium that X10 uses (your home’s electrical system) isn’t designed for carrying data signals. In many ways, instead of being overly critical of X10’s shortcomings, we should be pleased that it manages to work at all.
