Avoid False Intrusion Alarms

When your home automation software receives a signal from a motion detector, it’s often useful to perform a few logical tests before deciding to sound an alarm.

Motion detectors aren’t perfect [Hack #6] , and they can be triggered by things such as warm air pockets, a moving shadow from a tree, or a pet. If you want to use a motion detector to help protect your home, it’s best to add a little scripting that checks several conditions to make sure your detectors aren’t just seeing phantom movement. This is particularly useful if you’re going to sound an alarm or otherwise make a commotion when you think you have an intruder. Trust me, if you skip over this hack now, you’ll be back the first time you get a false alarm such as this during dinner.
