Control Your Home from Your Car

Use the HomeLink wireless transmitter as a remote control for your home.

Many recent-model cars and trucks have a HomeLink (http://www.homelink.com) transmitter. The HomeLink is a built-in wireless remote control that you can program to send commands to your garage door and, as luck would have it, to wireless X10 transceivers [Hack #5] . According to the product’s web site, it is included, or available as optional equipment, in more than 150 models from nearly every manufacturer. If your car has a HomeLink transmitter, it will be designated with a house logo, as seen on the three leftmost buttons at the bottom of the Nissan rear-view mirror shown in Figure 5-5. If your car doesn’t have a HomeLink, see the “Hacking the Hack” section for an alternative.
