Foster Green Pastures with a Smart Sprinkler System

For the ultimate in automated watering of your lawn and garden, use a dedicated sprinkler controller.

The invention of zoned sprinkler systems certainly has made watering your lawn and gardens simpler; you get to avoid the hassle of hoses and running outside every 30 minutes to move your sprinkler from one part of the yard to the next. However, although modern sprinkler timers finally have become easier to program than first-generation VCRs, they still leave much to be desired for truly hands-off operation.

You can trace most of these shortcomings to the fact that you cannot specify the amount of water your lawn and gardens need using a simple time duration (e.g., 20 minutes) and frequency (e.g., three times a week). What if it has rained for the last three days in a row? Worse, what if it is raining when your sprinkler is scheduled to run [Hack #67] ? What if it has been abnormally dry and hot the last several days? When it comes right down to it, you should use several variables, in addition to duration and frequency, when calculating an optimal watering schedule.
