Know When the Mail Arrives

If you like to know when your mail has been delivered, to avoid needless trips to the curb or just to be sure you pick it up right away, here’s an easy method to add a sensor to alert you to the delivery.

To set up this mail-notification system, first you’ll need to obtain a wireless doorbell kit from a hardware store. These typically are sold as replacement doorbell kits for use when you don’t want to run new wires. An example is the Dimango Wireless Doorbell (http://www.lamson-home.com; $30). Wireless doorbells consist of a matched transmitter and receiver. The transmitter has the button you push to ring the bell, which is enclosed in the receiver unit.

Carefully open the transmitter and solder a lightweight, solid-core wire onto each button contact so that touching the ends of the wires together rings the doorbell. Then, solder the wires to a normally open (NO) magnetic reed switch or to a NO magnetic security switch (http://www.smarthome.com/7113.HTML; $6). Mount the switch so that it is aligned, thus keeping the circuit open when your mailbox is closed. You’ll have to experiment a bit; if your mailbox doesn’t close well at the top edge, mount the switch to the bottom, or vice versa.
