Heat the Toilet Seat

Build your own heated toilet seat to take the edge off those cold winter mornings.

In a moment of whimsy, I decided I wanted a heated toilet seat. A web search revealed that heated seats seem popular in Japan, and that Kohler (http://www.us.kohler.com/pr/n_seamless.html) sells one in the U.S. for about $100, but it was the wrong size for our plumbing. As a result, I decided to build my own.

First, I acquired some foil heaters from the Minco Corporation (http://www.minco.com) that are about 20.1 ohms of resistance each (part #HK5427R20. 1L12B) and draw about 1 watt per square inch. I also purchased a new toilet seat (shown in Figure 3-10) for about $15. I selected a molded wood seat, instead of a plastic one, because I suspect that wood has better thermal conduction. In addition, the wood is easier to machine and cut.
