Control Your Heating Remotely

Replacing your existing thermostat with one that you can control by X10 commands enables you to control your home’s temperature remotely.

To control your home’s heating and air conditioning using home automation equipment, you need to replace your existing thermostat with one that responds to X10 commands. The RCS TBX16 HVAC Control System (http://www.smarthome.com/3045b.html; $250) is the choice of many home automators. It looks like a regular thermostat (as shown in Figure 3-8) and you can control it manually, just like the one you’re replacing. This gives the system a high SAF [Hack #14] because, for all appearances, it’s just a normal thermostat. You’ll like it, too, because it can seamlessly replace nearly any type of 24-volt thermostat you’re currently using—for gas, electric, oil, or propane systems—and you don’t have to pull new wires between the thermostat and the heater; the existing wiring will do the job.
