Broadcast Messages on Your Home Network

Macintosh users can use LanOSD to send lovely and unobtrusive onscreen messages to every computer on the network.

The LanOSD application (http://oomz.net/Lanosd/; free is a clever onscreen display notification manager for your home or office network. Install a copy of LanOSDon every Mac in your house, and you can have one Mac broadcast messages that instantly appear on the screens of all the others. LanOSD is nearly invisible when there is nothing to display—it adds an item to your menu bar and not to the Dock—but it’s beautiful when it has a message to deliver.

When a message arrives, it is displayed in a semitranslucent window that floats above whatever you’re working on. After a few seconds, the message fades from view. Even in Figure 2-7, it’s impossible to capture how nice this looks, so visit the product’s web site and view the animated examples for yourself.
