Announce Events with Recorded Announcements

If your computer doesn’t have text-to-speech capabilities, or if it does and you’re not satisfied with the quality of its voices, you can use prerecorded announcements instead.

Human speech is a great way to get someone’s attention. Unlike a simple bell or “eep!” sound, human speech can convey detailed information, and although we often filter out the beeps and boops of modern life, the spoken word causes our ears to perk up and pay attention. Instead of having your computer play a sound or a song, have it speak a prerecorded announcement. The advantage of prerecording is that the vocal quality can be higher than synthesized speech, and the processing power needed to play a sound file is very small. Another advantage is that you can offload the playback to another application, such as QuickTime Player, to ensure that your home automation system can continue doing other things while the sound is played.
