Welcome to the State Machine

Set up a simple state machine to keep track of key conditions and events in your home. Then, use this information to make your smart home even smarter.

One of the keys to having a truly automated home—that is, a home that can react intelligently and proactively to current conditions—is setting up a state machine. A state machine is simply a logical approach to keeping track of key conditions and events so you can decide how to react when something changes.

For example, if you keep track of whether the sun is up when somebody rings your home’s doorbell, you can turn on the porch light if it’s dark, or keep it off during daylight. Without keeping track of whether it’s dark outside, the best you could do is always turn on the light in case it might be dark—not a very good example of a smart home.
