P3.10. Acknowledgments

We got a lot of help from some great people to make this book. Special thanks to open source developers Robin Smidsrd, Robbie Harris, Shaun Faulds, and Isaac Richards for creating software that enables this technology and making it freely available. Special thanks to Axel Thimm and Jarod Wilson for helping the world by creating a Linux-based home theater PC, and to Jon Simmons for his help designing the keyless entry system.

We had a great crew of tech reviewers: Casey Ajalat, Jon Simmons, Tom Keegan, Chris Geggis, and Dale Dougherty. The time they dedicated to the early draft of this book greatly improved the quality, and we are indebted to each of them.

We'd also like to thank Mark Frauenfelder for his "geek" illustrations, used throughout the book to illustrate how the projects work.

Eric would like to thank Tony for bringing him into the world of book writing by asking for assistance with this book. It happened just days after Eric said, "I want to be more like you." He'd also like to express his gratitude to the people at O'Reilly, especially Dale Dougherty, for trusting him to complete this project without having a proven track record. He thanks his many geeks friends, Chris Russo, Tom Keegan, Bob Hogan, Chris Geggis, and Casey Ajalat, for inspiring him to learn and grow professionally. He's grateful for the folks at the Southeast Asian Restaurant whose authentic open-air market cuisine gave him a reason to go out into the sunlight every Saturday. He also wants to thank Will and Jean Winslow for picking up his slack around the house and for their feedback on projects. More than anyone else, Eric is indebted to his wife, Alyssa, for her unwavering patience and support while he toiled away in the basement. And, of course, he thanks his beautiful daughters, Amanda and Lily, for making it fun to be a dad.

Tony wants to thank his friends and family for helping him relax between projects and being patient while he worked too many long nights. Thank you, Tara Banks, Kristin Cavour, Kurt Dillard, Chris and Diane Geggis, Bob Hogan, Samuel Jackson, Khristina Jones, Tom Keegan, and Eric John Parucki (who, if he does nothing else with this book, should read Chapter 4). I'm thankful to the host, bartenders, and waitstaff at Rudy's Café in Somerville (the best Tex-Mex experience a displaced Texan can have), who know me as "Tony for two," "Two prickly-pear margaritas no salt," and "Number four with chips and salsa," respectively. I have to thank Howard Stern, Robin Quivers, Artie Lange, and the rest of the crew for getting me up in the morning and for inspiring Chapter 9. Leo, Patrick, Jessica, Kevin, Dan, Jessica, Sarah, Yoshi, and Jessica at the Screensavers (TechTV) reminded me that 7 p.m. is time to stop work—although, because of the PVR, I often kept working. More than anyone, I have to thank my wife, Erica, for being so patient during many long days of writing. Erica's family, Mike, Michelle, Sandi, and Raymond Edson, as always, kept me in good spirits during the holidays (and by "spirits," I mean booze).
