11.2. Linking the Physical Plant to the Control Medium

The first thing you need is a means to relay the state of the lock to the other parts of the system. In other words, when the door is locked, you want the lock to be able to announce that it's locked; you want a similar announcement when it's unlocked. These announcements will be used as triggers to indicate to the system that an event has occurred.

In order to create a communication link between the lock and the control medium, you're going to embed a tiny RF transmitter in the lock. This transmitter started its life as a compact X10 keychain remote; when stripped of all its outer trappings, it fits neatly into the lock. You'll use it to send one X10 signal for a locking event, and another for an unlocking event.
