Chapter 9. Create Time-Shifted FM Radio > Whole-House Control Distribution

9.6. Whole-House Control Distribution

Broadcasting audio around your home is only half the battle—the other half is controlling your music. For that, you'll need to find a way to make your IR remote work anywhere in your house. In this project, you'll be hooking up a system to translate IR signals into radio frequency (RF) transmissions that can pass through walls, and then convert them back into IR.

After completing the previous phase, you can listen to your music collection or your TV from anywhere in your house using any FM radio. You lose something, though: the ability to pause the music, change tracks, or change stations. With conventional stereo equipment, you can control this with an IR remote, but those only work when you are standing in the same room as the system. Now that you're piping sound from your computer to anywhere in your home, you also need a way to pipe IR signals back to the computer, and a way for your computer to interpret these signals.
