7.4. The User Interface

In this phase you'll be introducing the user interface to the home theater PC. You'll begin by installing the software that provides the frontend, and configure it to accommodate new components that you'll be adding in the Services Layer.

Setting Up Automatic Logon

Before you can establish automatic logons, you need to create a user account for it.

  1. Go to Start Control Panel.

  2. Click User Accounts.

  3. Click "Create a new account" and name it HTPCUser. Click Next.

  4. Select Limited as the account type and click Create Account.

  5. Click the newly created user account and then click "Create a password." You can optionally set a phrase to remind you what the password is in case you forget.

  6. Close the User Accounts window and the Control Panel.

To enable automatic logons, you also need to make some changes in the Windows Registry:

  7. Go to Start Run.

  8. Type regedit and click OK.

  9. Find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and add or edit the following string values:

    AutoAdminLogon	1
    DefaultUserName	HTPCUser
    DefaultDomainName	<machine
name if not part of a domain>
    DefaultPassword <use the
     Password you created>

Changes to the Registry take effect immediately, so there's no Save command. Just restart your computer, and it should automatically log on with the account you specified.
