7.3. The Software Platform

Believe it or not, building this HTPC on a base of Microsoft Windows XP is accomplished entirely with freely downloadable software (if you don't count the operating system). In fact, in designing this system, I found the Windows-based HTPC software to be far less finicky than comparable Linux software. This project assumes you have Windows installed and some sort of Internet access.

It's probably worth noting that the software we'll be using is community-developed and changing all the time. There's a possibility that versions of applications and drivers mentioned here will no longer be available, although you should be able to get away with using whatever the current versions are. Both the Windows and Linux HTPC software developers have well-populated and frequently updated forums where you can likely find decent help.
