13.8. Extensions

This project has already grown quite a bit from my original plan, but it could be taken even further. One of my biggest concerns is the relative lack of security associated with the arming/disarming mechanism. While I don't expect that a typical thief will be able to disarm my homemade X10-based security system, I don't like to rely on security by obscurity. A knowledgeable thief could bypass the entire system using an electrical outlet on the exterior of my house.

There are a few different ways I could improve the security of the arming mechanism. I could use a disarming method that communicated with my computer using a means other than X10, such as a device that connected to my wireless network. I could also build intrusion detection into the script to alert me if a potential intruder were randomly transmitting X10 signals to find the signal that disarmed my system. Of course, that does exist to some extent, since the intruder would probably stumble across an X10 signal that would cause an alarm to be thrown rather than disarming the system.
