Chapter 2. Surround Sound Formats

Chapter 2. Surround Sound Formats

To accurately re-create the movie theater experience at home, you need two things: a big screen and big sound. Although you won’t be able to have a screen the same size as your local theater’s, you can achieve a home theater sound that rivals the theater’s. Because your living room is much smaller than the theater’s viewing area, sound placement and imaging can be even more dramatic than in the theater. Although having a large video monitor is a big factor, home theater sound is the difference between watching a movie and experiencing it.

If you don’t buy into the importance of home theater sound, try this experiment. Go to your local home theater retailer to demonstrate some of their gear. Try out some of their home theater systems. After you’ve watched a scene on a big screen with big sound, ask the salesman to turn off the home theater sound and just use the sound from the television. You’ll quickly realize how much of the experience you’ve just lost. The sound makes you forget you are sitting comfortably at home and creates the illusion that you are part of the action.
