Chapter 5. Setting a Budget > What Components Do You Already Own?

What Components Do You Already Own?

The easiest way to optimize your budget is to identify necessary components you already own. Most likely, you currently own at least one component of a home theater system that you could possibly incorporate into your new system. If you own a television, VCR, pair of speakers, or DVD player, all these components may be able to serve a purpose in your new system.

Your TV

When building a home theater system, the television is usually one of the biggest ticket items. If you are fortunate enough to already own a television suitable for a home theater, you should give serious thought to using your existing monitor. This frees up needed money in your budget for the rest of your components. If your existing television set is at least 32 inches (measured diagonally from top corner to bottom corner), you will likely not have to purchase a new set.
