Chapter 5. Setting a Budget > How Much Do You Have to Spend?

How Much Do You Have to Spend?

You have to determine how much you can afford to spend on a home theater system. Establish your maximum budget before you start shopping. For the purpose of this book, we set your total budget at $3,000 and use this budget throughout as we research, select, and assemble your hypothetical system. Most likely, your actual budget will not be exactly $3,000, but you can still use the techniques we discuss for your real budget.

An easy way to determine approximate spending on each component is to calculate the scale of your budget compared to our sample budget of $3,000. For example, if you only have $1,500 to spend, the scale calculates to .5 ($1,500/$3,000). Using this scale, if we spend $500 on a particular component, you can scale your purchase on that component to $250 ($500×.5).
