Chapter 9. Getting the Most Out of Your ... > Calibrating Your Home Theater System

Calibrating Your Home Theater System

Although it usually isn’t feasible to remodel your entire room to obtain better sound, it is quite possible to rearrange and adjust the settings on your existing components to optimize your current setup. That’s where calibration—the process of positioning, adjusting, and tweaking your system to achieve maximum performance—comes in. You can calibrate your system by using a few simple tools and techniques discussed in the following sections, and you won’t regret doing it, as you will enhance your system’s sound and picture quality. After all, it doesn’t make much sense to buy an expensive new television monitor and then not calibrate it. Often, a properly calibrated inexpensive television can look as good as or better than a more expensive uncalibrated monitor, because most television monitors come with extremely bright settings that are far from optimal.

Tools of the Trade

There are several tools that are handy to have in order to help calibrate your system. You don’t need to spend a great deal of money on these tools, and they are available in a range of prices.
