Flat Response

The ability of a speaker to output equal volume levels of a signal over the entire audible range. Many speakers cannot reproduce sounds below 80 Hz at the same level at which they reproduce higher frequencies. A desirable output level curve would show flat response for 80Hz–20 kHz with the subwoofer handling the task of re-creating sounds below 80 Hz. A typical speaker may be rated as 56 Hz–20 kHz (+/- 3 db). The +/- 3 db rating refers to the speaker outputting a response that fluctuates by no more than 3 db over the frequency range stated.

Frequency Range

A range, measured in Hz, in which a device can output a signal without distortion and without significant output gain or loss.
