Calibration Disc

A DVD disc that is used to obtain optimal audio and video settings from your home theater components. These discs include measured test signals that, when measured with a decibel meter, allow users to ensure that equal volume levels are being output by all of the speakers in a home theater system regardless of acoustical differences in the room. These discs also help optimize video settings on the television monitor to ensure proper brightness, tint, and color settings. The most popular calibration discs are Avia Guide to Home Theater and Video Essentials. (See Figure G.7.)

Center Channel

A speaker that is used to reproduce dialogue and sounds occurring in the middle of the scene. The center channel receives very high usage in DVD movie playback. The center channel should be timbre matched with the left and right speakers so the transition between these speakers cannot be detected. Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic I & II use a front-center channel. Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES surround sound formats use a front-center and a rear-center channel. (See Figure G.8.)
