Chapter 6.  Using Advanced Features  >  Switching from Mac to Windows

Switching from Mac to Windows

The iPod is specially configured with software for either a Mac or a Windows-based PC. The iPod is initially formatted in the HFS Plus file format, which is optimized for performance and usability in Mac OS X and 9. The iPod for Windows software reformats the iPod to the FAT32 file format, which is optimized for performance and usability in Windows Me, 2000, and XP. Note that once it is reformatted, it will only work with Windows unless you reformat it for Macs.

Switching from Mac to Windows reformats the iPod’s disk, wiping out all your music and data, and restores the iPod to its factory default settings, removing any custom settings. After reformatting, you have to update your iPod with music and information, and customize your settings again.
