Using Your iPod as a Macintosh Disk

The iPod, as shipped, is formatted as a Macintosh disk and can be connected to any Mac. And like any hard disk, you can transfer files and applications from your computer to your iPod and take them with you wherever you go. The iPod is smart enough to keep your files separate from your music collection so that they will not be accidentally erased when you update your music.

Mounting the iPod as a Disk
