Backing Up and Sharing Your Music Library

Copyright law, and common sense, prohibits you from copying a commercial CD and selling the copy to someone else. You also can’t sell the individual songs of a commercial CD. However, you are allowed to make copies of music for your personal use, including copies for your iPod and for backup purposes.

Some music that you can use with your iPod is protected. The Apple Music Store uses technology that protects the rights of artists, while also giving consumers some leeway in how they can use the music. You can copy the music files freely, so file backup is easy and straightforward on either a PC or a Mac.
