Chapter 1.  Getting in Tune  >  Updating Your iPod Automatically

Updating Your iPod Automatically

Before you add music to your iPod, you need to import the music into iTunes or MusicMatch Jukebox on your computer. As you build up your music library on your computer, you can update your iPod at any time to copy the music you imported, keeping your iPod up-to-date with your music library. Adding music to your iPod, and deleting music from your iPod, can be completely automatic. By default, your iPod is set up to update itself automatically, synchronizing itself with your music library.

When your iPod updates itself automatically, it matches your library exactly, song for song, playlist for playlist. iTunes or MusicMatch Jukebox automatically copies everything in your music library to the iPod, but does not copy songs stored remotely (such as songs shared from other iTunes libraries on a network). If you made changes in your music library after the last time you updated your iPod, those changes are automatically made in the iPod when you connect it again to your computer. If you added or deleted songs in your library, those songs are likewise added or deleted in your iPod’s library.
