14.6. AvantGo

Imagine a web browser that's lightning fast, shows full graphics and text styles, and doesn't even require a modem for your palmtop. That's the beauty of AvantGo, a free Windows program with a matching component for the PalmPilot. This combination offers a clever twist on bringing the Web to the PalmPilot, one that's become a hit among corporate users.

14.6.1. AvantGo Via the Desktop

You can use AvantGo in either of two ways. First, you can get your web pages via your PC. At HotSync time, the AvantGo desktop-PC software dials the Internet (or hooks into your company's intranet), rapidly grabs the web pages that you're interested in, and compresses them into PalmPilot-ready format. (You can specify how many pages "deep" you want to be able to follow links in the downloaded web pages.) At the next HotSync, the pages are transferred to the PalmPilot. Thereafter, on your own time, you can call up those pages and read them without pressure—and without a modem (see Figure 14.13).
