Chapter 9. Palm Desktop: Macintosh > The Story of Palm Desktop

9.1. The Story of Palm Desktop

When Palm set out to create Palm Desktop for the Macintosh, it realized that writing such a program from scratch would take years. Instead, the company got both lucky and smart: it learned that Claris Organizer, a popular, easy-to-use calendar/address book program for the Mac, had become orphaned when Apple Computer dismantled its Claris subsidiary. Ironically, Palm's original software designers had, years earlier, used the four modules in Claris Organizer—Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes—as models for the PalmPilot's primary four programs.

Palm couldn't resist; it did the right thing and purchased Claris Organizer outright from Apple. After a year of enhancement by Palm Computing, Claris Organizer became the new Palm Desktop 2.1.
