Personalizing Windows 72 Cleaning Up Your Desktop Shortcuts Windows XP includes a Desktop Cleanup Wizard that sweeps all your unused desktop icons into an Unused Desktop icons folder, thus cleaning up a cluttered desktop. Windows XP automatically runs the Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days, but you can also run the wizard manually. Just follow these steps: 1. 2. 3. Open the Display Properties dialog box, select the Desktop tab, and then click the Customize Desktop button. When the Desktop Items dialog box appears, select the General tab. Click the Clean Desktop Now button to run the Wizard now. Changing the Way the Start Menu Works You use the Start menu every time you launch a program. Windows offers a few ways for you to customize the way the Start menu works for you. Applying Start Menu Special Effects Windows XP applies a handful of special effects to the Start menu. You can animate the Start menu when it opens, force submenus to open when you hover over them, and highlight new applications. To change these special effects, follow these steps: 1. Right-click the Start button and select Properties from the pop-up menu; this displays the Task- bar and Start Menu Properties dialog box.
