Troubleshooting a Dial-Up (Analog Modem) Connection

Although dial-up (analog modem) connections are stored in the Network Connections folder in Windows XP, they differ in many ways from other types of network connections. Some typical problems include the following:

  • Incorrect telephone number

  • Incorrect username or password

  • Loose or damaged RJ-11 telephone cable

  • No dial tone

  • Modem failure

  • Driver corruption or incorrect driver installed

  • Windows software component corruption

  • Busy signal or server problems at the ISP
