Troubleshooting IEEE-1394 Ports and Hubs

IEEE-1394 (FireWire) ports, like USB ports, support hot-plugging and hot-swapping, but they differ in some significant ways from USB ports. Although some systems have integrated 1394 ports, most systems still rely on add-on cards to provide 1394 support. Systems with front-mounted 1394 ports rely on header cables connected to a 1394-enabled motherboard to provide support.

If you plug an IEEE-1394 device into a port on your system and nothing happens, your system probably has a problem with the port. Check out Table 7.1 for the “prime suspects.”
