Part: VI Appendixes > From Server to Handheld

From Server to Handheld

The process begins when a piece of software detects that there is a new email in your email account. This software can be either the Desktop Redirector or the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. While there are many differences between the Desktop Redirector and the server, in this regard they have the same function—to get the new email message from your account and begin the process of sending it to your handheld.

Processing begins by first removing any attachments that are part of the email message. The attachments are replaced with a stub that will let you know the attachments were there, but not actually sent to the handheld. The stubs also help the Attachment Service to find the attachment if you later want to view the attachment.
