Understanding Computer Memory

The easy part of increasing your computer's memory is performing the installation. The hard part is determining what type of memory you need to buy. That's because there are many different types of memory available; you need to figure out what type of memory your computer uses to buy the right RAM for your system.

How much memory is enough? With Windows 98 and Windows Me, I recommend at least 128MB of RAM. If you're running Windows XP, however, you need even more memory; I find that 256MB works well for most users—although 512MB is much better.
