Chapter 5. The Right Tools for the Job > The Basic Bot Builder’s Toolbox

The Basic Bot Builder’s Toolbox

Just as there are different types of robots, there are different sets of robot tools, depending on what types of bots you’re planning on building. Small robots, like the types described in the following chapters, mainly use household tools and a few specialty items you can get at your local electronics store. Bigger robots, such as combat robots, utility robots, and humanoids, usually require bigger shop tools (drill presses, milling machines, and so forth) and specialty techniques (metal fabrication, composite molding, and so forth). For purposes of this book, we’ll only be covering the tools needed for building the commercial kits described in Chapter 6, “Acquiring Mad Robot Skills,” and the bot projects later in this book. Although you might have many of the tools listed in the following sections, we thought we’d run through them all. You’ll want to have all of these handy as you build your robots.
