Chapter 9. Project 3: Building a DiscRover > The Brains Behind the Bot

The Brains Behind the Bot

Our previous two robots have been more brawn than brain. Our DiscRover is the exact opposite. It’s little more than two motors, two wheels, and two plastic discs. Most of the action in this project is in the microcontroller brain (and the supporting motor controller). To gain a full appreciation for what this robot can do, let’s first discuss the controllers we’ll be using.

OOPic: The “Hardware Object”

The microcontroller module we’ll use on this project is called the OOPic (pronounced EW-pik). A PIC is a programmable integrated circuit or, in other words, an IC that you can download programs into. The OO in OOPic stands for object-oriented (programming).
