Chapter 9. Project 3: Building a DiscRover > AOL Just Got a Whole Lot Smarter

AOL Just Got a Whole Lot Smarter

In this, our final project, we raise the complexity level a little bit, and also increase the versatility of the bot we’re building. The other two projects were fairly limited in what we could do to expand upon when we were finished. Because this project is basically a miniature development platform like the ones we discussed in Chapter 4, “Robot Anatomy Class,” it offers all sorts of experimental possibilities. This is mainly because we’ve added a reprogrammable computer component, a microcontroller unit (MCU). Our walker and junkbot were hardware-only critters. To alter them, we had to add, remove, or change hardware components. With the DiscRover, we have an onboard microcontroller that enables us to create programs that control the robot’s behavior (see Figure 9.1). All sorts of different sensor systems can then be added and programmed.
