Chapter 6. Acquiring Mad Robot Skills > Thumbnail Guide to Electronics

Thumbnail Guide to Electronics

Hey, did you hear the one about the geek who tried to teach the absolute beginner practical electronics in just a few pages? Well, you’re about to, and it’s no joke! Despite what you might think, learning basic electronics really isn’t that hard. Sure, the deeper you get, the thicker the thicket (of math and logic, impenetrable tech jargon, complex circuit designs, and so forth), but the basics can be taught to just about anyone. So, put on a pot of strong coffee (or for you teen readers, grab a Jolt Cola), and get ready for a whirlwind course in practical magic or “how to get the universe’s electrons to do your bidding!”

As you’ll notice in the preceding paragraph, we used the word “practical.” That means we won’t spend too much time with the physics underlying electrical circuits. We’re going to quickly jump ahead to electronic components themselves and how they function. But for those of you who were busy drawing band logos on your spiral notebooks during science class, let’s recap a few things:
