Chapter 6. Acquiring Mad Robot Skills > Other Cool “Antique” Robots

Other Cool “Antique” Robots

Armatron/Super Armatron

Radio Shack has sold some cool electronic toys over the years, but nothing beats the Armatron, a noncomputerized robotic arm. The arm had six degrees of freedom controlled by two joysticks. The gripper/arm wasn’t capable of handling much weight, but it was still an impressive demonstration of basic robot arm mechanics at a very reasonable price (between $20–$30). It also had a timer on it and came with plastic objects of various types and sizes that you were supposed to organize and stack before time ran out. Trying to find one of these online or at a flea market/yard sale is definitely worth the effort.
