Your Mac's Startup Routine

As soon as you start it up, your Mac will make a little sound. For the next minute or two, it will go through a startup process during which several screens will appear. The first is a gray Apple logo on a white screen. You'll then see an introductory screen where the components that are loading will be identified.

The Operating System is the fuel that feeds the engine or processor that runs your Mac. It's software that makes all the disparate components of your computer run in harmony and controls how the various programs you run operate. Without an operating system, your computer would be like a car without gas.
