SMS from a Computer

Send SMS messages with a real keyboard!

SMS is often the best way to reach people on the move. Since SMS messages are pushed to the phone over the cellular network, it can be much faster than regular email. However, it is inconvenient to type and send SMS messages on a phone keypad [Hack #58] . In this hack, you will learn how to type and send SMS messages from a regular keyboard on your desktop computer.

The key challenge I need to address in this hack is how to connect a computer to the wireless network where SMS messages are transmitted. You can do this in three ways:

  • You can purchase and install a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM)/GPRS PC card (e.g., GlobeTrotter, Ubinetics, or Merlin) and directly connect the computer to the wireless network. Most new cards are expensive, but you can buy a used Merlin G100 card for as little as $50. You need to put your SIM card into the PC card—you cannot use your phone while you are SMS messaging from the PC. Due to their price and limitations, those PC cards are not the focus of this hack.
