Chapter 5. Windows Explorer Annoyances > BEYOND WINZIP SELF-EXTRACTOR

BEYOND WINZIP SELF-EXTRACTOR

The Annoyance:

I downloaded a cool utility from Microsoft's site. When I double-clicked the file, a dialog box asked me to unzip the file into a folder. Once the file was successfully unzipped, there were no further instructions. What do I do next?

The Fix:

Microsoft uses a really dumb unzipping program, the WinZip Self-Extractor (see Figure 5-7). Here's what to do: once the unzipping tool is finished, click the Close button. Then use Windows Explorer to go to the folder where you saved the file. In some cases, you'll need to run an installation program, often named Setup.exe; other times, you'll need to find a readme.txt or readme.doc file that supplies additional instructions.
