Chapter 5. Windows Explorer Annoyances > BROADEN WINDOWS' SEARCH HORIZONS

BROADEN WINDOWS' SEARCH HORIZONS

The Annoyance:

When your hard disk contains a gazillion files, it's just about impossible to remember where you put everything, or even what you named the file. That's why I search for specific text within files. Yet sometimes, Windows doesn't find my file!

The Fix:

The problem is that Windows XP doesn't search all files, only certain types (based on file extension). The original version of Windows XP could only search inside Microsoft Office files, HTML pages, and a handful of other types. Installing Service Pack 1 for Windows XP adds "filter components" for dozens of additional file types, so that should be your first move if you're plagued by this annoyance.
