Chapter 7. Hardware Annoyances > MANAGE MULTIPLE BULKY AC ADAPTERS

MANAGE MULTIPLE BULKY AC ADAPTERS

The Annoyance:

The engineers who design AC adapters for notebooks and handhelds should be sentenced to 20 whacks with a geometry textbook. Some transformers almost weigh more than the device they're powering!

The Fix:

This is one of my A-list annoyances. I bought APC's $45 Professional SurgeArrest surge protector (see http://snipurl.com/apc_surge); it has eight outlets, three of which are spaced far enough apart to accept most AC adapters. Belkin's ten-outlet SurgeMaster (see http://snipurl.com/belkin_surge) has four outlets capable of accommodating hefty adapters. Since I have more than four large adapters, I bought a vertical rack-mount power strip designed for a workbench. It has eight outlets over its four-foot length, each about six inches apart.
